A New Horizon for the MDF Industry

CalPlant, creator of the revolutionary Eureka™ medium density fiberboard (MDF), was founded with the sole purpose of creating and manufacturing agrifiber-focused building products for the 21st century.

Strategically located in the heart of the rice farming community in Willows, California, CalPlant promotes environmentally conscious practices by producing Eureka from renewable post-harvest rice straw.

What is Eureka™ MDF?

As a medium density fiberboard product made from post-harvest rice straw with no added formaldehyde, Eureka Sustainable High Performance MDF matches the performance of traditional wood MDF. With excellent machinability, paintability and consistency, it can be used to make furniture, cabinetry, doors, mouldings and more.

See Eureka Up Close

Take a look at Eureka up close to see how Eureka can be used just like traditional MDF. Manufactured with solutions in mind, it’s easy to see how Eureka can be employed as a sustainable alternative to wood MDF.

How Eureka Is Made

Combining naturally occurring features of rice straw with a state-of-the-art ContiRoll® Generation 9 Siempelkamp press, CalPlant manufactures Eureka for machinability and strength with advanced instrumentation and process control technology. At the microscopic level curled rice straw fibers provide Eureka dimensional stability and strength, and our innovative fiber refining processes transform the rice straw from a waste material into an environmentally conscious MDF product. With its advanced energy efficiency, the Siempelkamp ContiRoll® press further supports CalPlant’s operational sustainability goals and contributes to Eureka’s environmental profile.

Reliably Sourced and Abundantly Available

Because the rice straw used to manufacture Eureka is annually renewable, available and abundant, CalPlant anticipates consistent production without raw material shortages. Rice straw is collected each fall within an average 25-mile radius of the plant, substantially reducing the impact of transporting raw material to the manufacturing site. And by removing the waste straw from the rice fields, water that would’ve been needed to flood the fields over winter will instead be conserved.

Rooted in Sustainability

Eureka represents rice straw’s transformation from a wasted natural byproduct to a product that can be used to build sustainable solutions for the workplace and home. Eureka MDF is manufactured in an environmentally conscious way that supports our local community, an integral part of our company’s values.
